Building a Pool in the Winter: What to Expect — and Why It’s Still Worth It

When most people think about building a pool, winter may not be the first season that comes to mind. However, at Kevin Sparks Signature Pools, winter construction is something we know well — because we’ve been doing this for over 40 years. While there are a few realities homeowners should understand, the good news is this: winter pool projects are absolutely possible, and when handled correctly, they set you up beautifully for the seasons ahead.

We recently received some insightful feedback and were given permission to share with you about the value of choosing the experts, especially this time of year…

We came to y’all’s office last year and got a price for a pool and decided it was too much, so we went with another company.  The old saying you get what you pay for is so true.  The company installed our pool in Jan last year and poured the concrete on a day when the temperature never got to 32 degrees.  Four days later it started cracking and we had trouble with them for almost a year and then they sold the company.  So, tell your customer about us and let them know that you do get what you pay for.  We have kicked ourselves several times for not biting the bullet and going with y’all.  I’m sure we would have been a whole lot better off.

Our goal is always the same — to create your dream backyard while keeping our crew safe, protecting your property, and keeping your project moving forward with quality and care.

Understanding Winter Weather Delays

Winter weather can be unpredictable, and that sometimes means brief pauses in construction. Freezing temperatures, rain, snow, or ice can temporarily delay certain phases of the project — not because we don’t want to work, but because some steps simply shouldn’t be rushed.

Frozen ground or frozen gravel, for example, can make excavation and installation unsafe or ineffective. Waiting for the right conditions helps ensure your pool is built correctly the first time — which protects both the integrity of your pool and your investment.

Temperature Matters for Materials

Many homeowners are surprised to learn that certain construction materials are temperature-sensitive. Mortars, silicones, and adhesives often require a minimum temperature to cure properly and perform as intended.

Attempting to use these materials in conditions that are too cold can compromise their strength and longevity. Our experienced team carefully monitors weather conditions and schedules these phases when temperatures are right — ensuring a finished product that lasts for years to come.

Protecting Your Yard During Construction

Another important factor during winter builds is ground stability. Excess rain can turn access paths into muddy terrain, increasing the risk of heavy equipment sinking or damaging your yard.

When conditions aren’t ideal, we may pause work to allow the ground to dry and firm up. This isn’t lost time — it’s a proactive step that helps us keep your property cleaner, avoid unnecessary damage, and maintain safe working conditions for our crew.

Safety Comes First — Always

In the past, winter weather has brought snow and ice that make roads unsafe to travel. When conditions are hazardous, we prioritize the safety of our team by delaying travel until it’s safe. A careful, responsible approach ensures everyone goes home safely — and your project continues without preventable setbacks.

Trust our Experience. Trust the Process.

Winter pool construction requires planning, patience, and experience — and that’s exactly what we bring to every project. We’ve navigated every possible scenario over the past four decades, and we know how to adapt while keeping projects moving forward responsibly.

Yes, winter builds may take a little more flexibility — but the payoff is worth it.

Next winter, when your beautiful pool is covered in a light blanket of snow, you’ll look out your window knowing the hard part is done… and warmer days are right around the corner.
